The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an inquiry into the death of the late former MP, Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a head-on collision with a PSV bus on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway on December 13, 2025.

Investigators have secured CCTV footage, interviewed the bus driver and witnesses, and are conducting further forensic analysis to establish the circumstances of the crash.

According to a statement released on Tuesday from the DCI, the accident occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, in the Karai area.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the collision involved Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 350C,, and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration number KCU 576A, operated by Climax Company Ltd.

The impact was severe. The statement notes that the head-on collision pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away.

In response, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to the scene.

The team conducted preliminary examinations, documented the site, and secured key exhibits for further analysis. CCTV footage retrieved from Eagol Petrol Station near the crash site has also been reviewed.

The footage reportedly shows that at 02:18:40 am, Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not fuel.

Moments later, at 02:19:10 am, he stopped at the station exit and then at 02:19:19 am, made a right turn, driving back towards Nairobi. By 02:19:25 am, the PSV bus collided with his vehicle.

The PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been questioned and is currently out on cash bail pending further investigation into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.

The statement confirmed that he is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025 for further police action.

DCI investigators have also interviewed petrol station staff, including the night guard and fuel attendant, who provided their accounts of events.

Detectives are examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including interactions during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Further statements are expected to be recorded from passengers aboard the PSV bus and other witnesses, while forensic experts are scheduled to revisit the scene for additional analysis.

Once investigations are complete, the DCI will compile a comprehensive police file to be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

In its statement, the DCI conveyed condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and relatives, affirming that the investigation will be thorough, impartial, and credible in line with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law.

The tragic incident has prompted heightened attention on road safety along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway, with investigators emphasising the importance of establishing the circumstances surrounding the collision to prevent similar occurrences.
